Back-to-school tips for healthy kids

0 3 Comments

Kids are healthy all summer and then school starts, mornings get cooler, and here we go: runny noses, digestive issues (ideally requiring you to pick up kids from school during work hours), and all sorts of kids bugs.

Why does it happen?

» In order to be fast during school days, we tend to use processed foods and snack bars more often. Kids get less fresh food, fewer fruits and vegetables, and thus fewer vitamins!

» Physical activity and sunshine exposure decrease for most kids once they get back to school. Lack of vitamin D impacts their immune system, lack of movement during the day impacts their mood and their sleep. That again harms their health.

» Sleep and relaxation. Getting back to school is a lot of stress for the kids (it does not mean you should be sorry for them, think of it rather as physical stress, they get very busy).

What can you do to prevent it?

» Make sure your kids’ meals will not include processed shortcuts. A banana is a ready-made, wrapped-up snack kids love. And you find many more quick tips on social media (including my FB and Instagram).
» To increase sun exposure – walk to school if possible. Or park your car further away – especially if it helps avoid crowded parking lots. Walk to school with your child – that is good for both of you and your relationship. Every minute outside counts and especially in the mornings!
» When you get home, try to send your child to play in the courtyard, or go to the park together if possible. This is really crucial. You support their health, sleep, mood, and you prevent obesity.
» Make sure at least one day of weekends is spent outside. No need for long tracks, playing is all that’s needed.
» Before kids get used to their new routine, make sure they have time to relax, ie, do activities they love which will make them feel relaxed. Also, make sure their sleep regime adapts so that they get enough sleep!
» Keep a supply of 1-3, 1-6 beta glucans in your kitchen and if you feel that your child is tired or at risk of getting sick, add some to their meals.

Last but not least: If your child has a healthy omega-6 : omega-3 ratio, they will heal much faster no matter what happens! Contact me on Facebook or Instagram for a free intro session if you’d like to know HOW to achieve that.
